ABOUT THE PROJECT

Duration: 1. 1. 202531. 12. 2027

Funding source: ARIS

Reference number: AID HCH – Breakthrough in humanities and cultural heritage with artificial intelligence (J7-60128)

Project program: Large fundemental research project

Coordinator:

prof. dr. Gorazd Bajc

Concept

The project addresses the use of artificial intelligence with an interdisciplinary approach for the digital transformation of humanities research and the preservation of cultural heritage. The development of artificial intelligence tools and data space enables the analysis of digitized sources and data to improve research methods and heritage protection.

Purpose

The purpose of the project is to enable the effective exploitation of digitized resources and data for advanced research in the humanities and improved preservation of cultural heritage. The emphasis is on the preservation of social capital and a sustainable approach to the research and evaluation of cultural heritage.

Goals

The project aims to develop methodological, ethical and legal frameworks and artificial intelligence tools for responsible data sharing and analysis of heterogeneous sources. Concrete results include individual historical research (the role of women in anti-fascism and the development of Slovenian identity in a historical perspective), restoration of objects and more appropriate decision-making on conservation measures.

Project phases

Phase 1 – Consolidation [from M1 to M6]: The project’s research activities will begin immediately after its launch, supported by a well-established knowledge and technology base. The objective will be to refine the research questions from the perspectives of: (i) research methodologies for humanities and cultural heritage use-case studies, (ii) legal and ethical aspects, and (iii) technological potential.

Phase 2 – Source Selection [from M6 to M18]: The project will focus on the selection and availability of primary sources. To this end, relevant data sources will be identified and categorized, and metadata will be developed.

Phase 3 – Analysis and Synthesis [from M18 to M32]: In this phase, the project will focus on achieving key advances beyond the current state of the art. This will be accomplished through a systematic analysis of research questions in the field of humanities research, and through the synthesis of all relevant quantitative information obtained from interconnected data sources, using artificial intelligence tools and spatio-temporal analytics.

Phase 4 – Sustainability [from M32 to M36]: In the final phase of the project, activities related to the presentation and promotion of the technology will take center stage.
